Hanging Egg is an elegant and iconic hammock chair, designed by Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel in 1959. The hammock chair is part of Sika-Design's exclusive ICONS collection, which represents designer furniture, created by renowned designers. With great respect and admiration for the original designs and in close collaboration with the descendants of these renowned furniture designers, we are delighted to be able to bring these icons back.
The hammock chair is handmade in sustainable Indonesian rattan by skilled wicker makers. Sika-Design uses carefully selected rattan for furniture production to ensure the highest quality. Rattan is often compared to bamboo, but unlike bamboo which is hollow, rattan is a solid material. Rattan is a remarkably strong and indestructible material, and therefore you get a unique piece of design furniture that lasts for generations.
Hanging Egg is especially suitable for rooms with high ceilings, where there is air and space for the elegant hammock chair to come into its own. The hammock chair can be hung up in two ways - either with a chain directly in the ceiling or in a stand. Both are purchased as additions. The ceiling chain is 150 cm and can be shortened as needed. There is no hook for the ceiling, as it depends on the type of ceiling. The stand is 205 cm high and 105 cm in diameter and has a custom chain included. See our entire ICONS collection here.

This furniture is designed by Nanna Ditzel (1923-2005) who was an internationally recognized Danish designer. Together with her husband, Jørgen Ditzel (1921-1961), she established a design studio in 1946. In 1950, the couple began working with wicker in the renowned workshop founded by the famous wicker maker Robert W.
Ditzel's experimental approach to materials resulted in several innovative pieces of furniture made from rattan. This cooperation was the beginning of a renewed status for wicker furniture in interior design. Read more about Nanna and Jørgen Ditzel here.
This furniture is handcrafted in rattan, which is one of the most sustainable materials available for furniture manufacturing. Rattan is often confused with bamboo, but unlike hollow bamboo, rattan is a solid material. This makes rattan furniture very durable, and able to last for generations.
When steamed for 10-15 minutes, rattan can be formed by hand using old traditional manufacturing techniques and a few simple tools. Rattan comes in 600 different variants and at Sika-Design we only use the two best qualities called Tohiti and Manau. Read more about rattan here.
MAINTENANCE Rattan requires no maintenance but can be wiped with a lightly dampened cloth if needed.
Our cushions are developed in our Danish sewing studio to add extra comfort and fit perfectly into each piece of furniture. For our indoor cushions, we use high-quality foam that keeps its shape and ensures optimal comfort. These are presented in a selection of high-quality fabrics with a wear resistance of minimum 20.000 Martindale. Cushions that are made to order cannot be returned.
